Girls Elementary School - General Studies

The Hebrew Academy's General Studies Program, chartered by the State of Ohio and in line with the state’s Common Core curriculum, exposes students to an interactive world of learning that encourages discovery and deep thinking skills which are essential to be productive and successful in the 21st century. Our entire system has adopted the growth mindset philosophy of Dr. Carol Dweck where students learn that brains are muscles that can be developed through dedication and hard work. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for all future accomplishments.

Within this philosophy, Hebrew Academy students will find educators who strive to implement best academic practices for full-student engagement. On-going objective bench-marking and student monitoring provide accurate data for staff to create flexible groupings and to appropriately use leveled instructional materials that maximize learning for each individual student.

Our mission is to service each student in our school to achieve at their highest level. The General Studies program maintains a wide-ranging special education team including a school psychologist, classroom interventionists and pullout specialists that all modify curriculum and support students with identified educational needs. Teachers make it a priority to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners. We also offer enrichment opportunities for students who require more specialized instruction.

Our culture of learning and engagement extends to our staff. Professional Learning Communities encourage staff to work together in setting goals for each grade-level. The process of sharing and creating engaging lessons and accurate assessments, with peers and on-sight curricular coaches, inspires continuous professional growth.

The General Studies program has aligned our curriculum in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science to the state of Ohio’s Learning Standards. The Hebrew Academy adheres to Ohio State Test requirements beginning in grade 3, including the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Using all updated curricular materials for the core subjects, including Writer’s Workshop, Journey’s, Fundations and My Math, our students learn through various modalities within the student-centered classrooms.

Beginning in kindergarten, the students learn with systematic, evidence-based learning materials. Using I-ready as a diagnostic tool, supplemented with various grade level aligned assessments, and OSTs, our educators track trends, strengths, weaknesses, and overall performance from kindergarten through sixth-grade. The newly written Hebrew Academy General Studies curriculum and adopted curricular materials all serve as the building blocks for our high expectations and learning standards in every classroom.
